Wound Care
What causes open wounds on the feet and legs?
Many conditions can cause or contribute to open wounds, including:
- Diabetes
- Varicose veins
- Circulatory disorders
- Lupus
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Scleroderma
- Traumatic injury
- Lack of movement
Foot and leg wounds are one of the most common causes of amputation and disability today. But with the right wound care, you won’t have to face those dire consequences.
Why is early wound care so important?
The earlier that you get wound care help the better, especially if you suffer from a condition like diabetes that puts you at risk of ulcers. When a wound becomes infected, it can quickly get worse, and that’s when your foot, ankle, and lower leg health could be seriously endangered.
How does wound care work?
At St. Augustine Foot, Ankle & Vein, wound care is tailored to your issues and condition. Dr. LeBeau is a wound care specialist and is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Wound Specialists®. He’ll do one or more of the following things during your wound care treatment:
Topical treatments
Dr. LeBeau cleans the wound, then applies topical medication and bandages.
Debridement
If you have dead tissue around the wound, Dr. LeBeau removes it surgically.
Offloading
Offloading means relieving wound pressure with orthotics, braces, crutches, or other devices.
Dr. LeBeau can also use a variety of other wound care techniques, based on your wound and situation. During your wound care treatment, it’s also essential that you work closely with your primary care doctor or specialist to control underlying conditions like diabetes. Uncontrolled blood sugar and other problems can delay your healing and worsen your health, so be sure to take charge.
How can I prevent wound infection?
If you have a foot wound, it’s very important to follow Dr. LeBeau’s instructions closely to prevent infection. Change your wound dressings and apply topical medication as directed by Dr. LeBeau and strictly follow guidelines about keeping your wound away from water. Always use your prescribed orthotics or other medical devices — and never go barefoot.
When you need wound care for ulcers or other foot and leg wounds, you can trust Dr. LeBeau at St. Augustine Foot, Ankle & Vein to provide personalized treatment. Book an appointment online or by phone today.
