Orthotics

When do I need orthotics?

Your St. Augustine Foot, Ankle & Vein podiatrist, Dr. LeBeau, could recommend orthotics in several different circumstances. The main purpose of orthotics is to position your foot in the best way possible. They're most often prescribed for gait problems — issues with foot movement and the way you walk. Orthotics can also help with sports injuries like shin splints and Achilles tendinitis.

Sometimes, orthotics work mainly to support and protect rather than to correct motion, as in the case of surgery recovery, diabetic foot ulcers, and severe calluses on the soles of your feet.

What custom orthotics options are available?

Three kinds of orthotics are available at St. Augustine Foot, Ankle & Vein:

Rigid

Rigid orthotics are, in most cases, made of carbon fiber or hard plastic. They slide into dress or walking shoes but usually not athletic shoes.

Rigid orthotics direct the movement of the most important foot joints so they can prevent you from making damaging motions like turning your feet inward while you walk. Many patients achieve pain relief and improved movement with the help of rigid orthotics.

Semirigid

Semirigid orthotics are made up of flexible and rigid layers. They help you maintain balance and proper weight distribution while you’re walking, running, jumping, or moving in other ways. Dr. LeBeau commonly prescribes semirigid orthotics for athletes, and they're also a common solution for kids with flat feet or intoeing (also called pigeon-toed).

Soft

Soft orthotics are constructed from soft, flexible materials. They ease pressure on delicate parts of the foot. Dr. LeBeau prescribes soft orthotics as part of diabetic foot care and wound care. Soft orthotics are excellent shock absorbers and can help you maintain your balance.

St. Augustine Foot, Ankle & Vein can personalize orthotics for any need.

Can I just buy over-the-counter orthotics instead?

At St. Augustine Foot, Ankle & Vein, Dr. LeBeau uses a high-tech computer design program to customize orthotics for your specific foot measurements and conditions. Because over-the-counter orthotics aren't fitted to your feet, they're not really able to guide foot movement or provide support in the exact areas where you need it.

Although over-the-counter orthotics can help with some minor foot conditions, they simply can't offer anything close to the benefits that truly customized ones can.

You can count on St. Augustine Foot, Ankle & Vein for the orthotics that are tailored to solve your foot and ankle issues. Book your appointment online or by phone today.
